Life of the Shang
- The ruins at Anyang, the capital of the Shang Dynasty, were found in 1928.
- They included palaces, a temple, and houses.
- There were also workshops for artisans, who were metalworkers, potters, stone workers, and people who worked with jade.
- The king's palace sat on a platform and was made of mud-plastered walls.
- Underneath people found human bones. They could have been sacrifices when building a new royal house. Human sacrifices were part of the Shang burials.
- At Anyang, at least 9 royal tombs were found.
- Each tomb had a large pit with ramps, slaves, servants, and animals were led down the ramps. They were sacrificed as a part of a belief that kings should continue to be served in the afterlife.
- Metal vessels and containers of food were also buried. The treasures buried included weapons, jade ornaments, pieces of pottery, stone sculptures, and even chariots.
